Flow Assurance

Flow assurance is one of the many O&G disciplines when it comes to production. The term was created by Petrobras in the mid 90s, when facing production impairments due to paraffin deposits at the Albacora field - Campos Basin.

Flow assurance activities include prediction, prevention, mitigation and removal of organic and inorganic deposits as well as the study of phenomena such as corrosion and erosion, that can hinder the flow through oil and gas production and transportation systems in a hydrocarbon field.

Flow assurance applications

Prevention of pipeline blockage

Paraffin and hydrates formation are flow assurance challenges faced by the oil & gas industry which require innovative technologies for proper management and mitigation. ESSS’s proprietary software, ALFAsim, simulates the fluid flowing along the entire production system and identifies the point at which these blockages may occur. Simulation results assist flow assurance engineers in planning production operations more efficiently which ultimately allow the production company to devise potential mitigation steps.

Reduce unnecessary costs related to pipeline pigging frequency

The primary goal of pipeline pigging is to perform various maintenance operations without stopping the flow of product in the pipeline, which includes the removal of deposits in the flowline, risers and pipes of the topside. ALFAsim tracks the deposit formation rate in the pipeline and assesses where blockages may occur. Simulation results assist flow assurance engineers to devise a better pigging frequency, ultimately reducing unnecessary costs.

Determine important production system properties

Simulate pressure and temperature profiles in transient multiphase flow

ALFAsim, combines robust mathematical models and an advanced numerical strategy to calculate the properties which are relevant to multiphase flow in the production system. Pressure and temperature profiles are important to determine Bottom Hole Pressure (BHP) and Bottom Hole Temperature (BHT), key factors to address the issue of damage of Permanent Downhole Gauge (PDG), which is responsible to measure BHP and BHT.

Academic Program

Using ALFAsim for academic research and teaching

For R&D centers and universities in partnership with ESSS, ALFAsim can be used to support and test new correlations and studies. In addition, once the user defines any pipe profile, ALFAsim can be used for experimental tests to predict the regime capturing throughout the pipeline.
